Straight answers about flooring

The things people actually ask us on estimates — about the process, custom showers, materials, and what happens after we're done.

Getting started

How does the estimate process work?

Call or text (281) 745-5831 and we'll set a time to come measure. We look at the space, check the subfloor, talk through material options, and send an itemized estimate — no charge and no obligation. Most estimates go out within a day or two of the visit.

How do I choose my materials?

In person, at our design center. You can browse the lines we carry on our selections page to get a feel for what we install, but final choices are made with full-size samples in hand — color on a screen is never the color in your room, and tile especially reads completely differently under your own lighting.

Can I supply my own flooring material?

Often yes, and we'll quote labor separately. The trade-off is that material warranties usually run through the supplier, so if a batch has a defect or you run short mid-install, that becomes your issue to resolve rather than ours. We'll tell you honestly whether it's worth it for your project.

How far in advance should I schedule?

Two to four weeks is typical, longer during spring and fall when remodeling picks up. Custom tile showers need more lead time than a straight flooring swap because material often has to be ordered in. If you have a deadline, tell us early and we'll work backward from it.

Custom showers & tile

Can you build a curbless walk-in shower?

Yes. A curbless or zero-entry shower means dropping the subfloor, usually running a linear drain, and carrying waterproofing well past the shower opening. Most Houston homes are slab-on-grade, which makes it more involved than in a home over a crawlspace — we'll tell you what your house actually allows before you commit to the look.

How big should a shower niche be?

Most niches are about 12 inches wide because that's what fits cleanly between studs, and 12 to 30 inches tall set roughly 40 to 48 inches off the floor. More important than the size is the layout: we plan the opening against your tile pattern so it lands on grout lines instead of a row of half-cut tile, and we keep it out of exterior walls and direct spray.

What is a Schluter edge profile and do I need one?

It's a metal trim that finishes the edge of tile wherever it stops — a niche opening, an outside corner, a doorway. Almost no tile comes with a finished edge anymore, so yes, you need something there. The choice is mostly aesthetic: rounded, square, or a thin reveal, in finishes from brushed nickel to brushed brass to solid black. We match it to your fixtures.

How long does a custom tile shower take?

One to two weeks for most, depending on size, pattern, and demo. Waterproofing and mortar both need cure time that can't be rushed, and we flood-test every pan before tile goes on, which adds a day. You get a day-by-day schedule with your estimate.

Do you install handmade tile like zellige or terracotta?

Yes. Handmade tile arrives with real variation in size, thickness, and color — that irregularity is the whole appeal, but it needs a wider grout joint, more overage ordered, and an installer who works with the variation instead of fighting it. Mention it early, because it changes the layout plan.

Materials & brands

What brands does Bluegrain Flooring carry?

Emser Tile for porcelain, ceramic, terracotta, and mosaics. Anderson Tuftex for hardwood. Mohawk RevWood for waterproof laminate. Artisan Innova for luxury vinyl plank. DH Floors for EnVision nylon carpet. You can browse specific collections and colors on our selections page.

What flooring holds up best in Houston's humidity?

Waterproof luxury vinyl plank and engineered hardwood handle Houston humidity far better than solid hardwood, which can cup or gap as the seasons swing. For wet areas, porcelain tile over proper waterproofing is the gold standard. Solid wood isn't off the table, it just needs the right room and realistic expectations.

What's the best flooring for homes with pets and kids?

Waterproof luxury vinyl plank, for most families. It resists scratches and accidents, cleans easily, and still reads as wood. Waterproof laminate is a close second at a lower price point. In bedrooms, a stain-resistant nylon carpet is worth keeping for the comfort and quiet.

Is laminate the same as luxury vinyl?

No. Laminate has a wood-fiber core with a printed layer on top; luxury vinyl is entirely synthetic and fully waterproof by construction. Modern waterproof laminate like RevWood closes much of that gap and often feels more like real wood underfoot, but in a room that might genuinely flood, vinyl is the safer bet.

During the job

Do I need to move my furniture?

We can handle it. Let us know what's in the room when we estimate so we plan the time for it. We ask that you box up small items, breakables, and anything irreplaceable yourself — we'd rather you pack the china than trust us with it.

How much dust and mess should I expect?

Tile and hardwood demo are genuinely dusty, so we use dust-containment practices, seal off work areas, and haul debris out rather than piling it in your yard. You'll still want to plan around it if someone in the house has respiratory issues, and we'll tell you which days are the messy ones.

Can I stay in my house during the work?

For most projects, yes. We work room by room where we can and keep a path clear. The exception is a whole-home floor replacement or a primary-bath remodel where that's your only shower — those are worth planning around.

After the job

Do you warranty your work?

Yes, our installation is warrantied, and materials carry their own manufacturer warranty on top. Ask us to spell out both in writing with your estimate so you know exactly what's covered by whom before anything gets installed.

What if something goes wrong after the install?

Call us at (281) 745-5831. We're a local, owner-run company in Houston — Ashley and Rodney answer for the work. Coming back to fix something is far cheaper for us than a bad review, and we'd rather hear about it than have you live with it.

Still wondering something?

Ask us directly — we'd rather answer a question now than have you guess. Call or text (281) 745-5831, or send us a note.
